The Essentials: Klean Kanteen Classic 27oz

EDK — These are the little bits of EveryDay Kit that make our life outdoors better. They’re not always glamorous, or the latest and greatest, but they’re always there for you when needed. We’ve chosen these products from among all others as they’re the kit we use on a regular basis.

Klean Kanteen Classic 27oz / 800ml Stainless water bottle

This is my go-to water bottle, as evidenced by the abundant scratches on the stainless construction.  The slim design and rounded bottom is easy to shove into a pack, and fits almost anywhere. Or, you can hang it with a carabiner thanks to the Loop Cap, which is one-piece moulded so there’s nothing there to break. The threading is also extremely strong, and seal completely leak-proof: I once left it full of water at the base of a route and came back to find it had frozen solid — the bottom had bulged out from the pressure, but the cap held firm and once the water had melted, there wasn’t a single leak to be found.

I also appreciate that if the threads freeze (this has happened) I can stick a pick or carabiner through the loop  and force it open with the extra leverage. The opening is also fairly large so it’s both easy to fill and easy to pick away at any ice that has formed on the surface. It won’t fit ice cubes, but during the summer I won’t hesitate to fill it the night before and toss it in the freezer overnight.

The Klean Kanteen Classic 27oz comes in ten colours and retails for $20 or so. Check it out here.
