How To: Wrap Your Tools with Grip Tape (aka Bike Tube)

Look at almost any serious or competitive mixed climber’s or drytooler’s technical tools and you’ll notice that most of the shaft, including the handle, is often covered in some sort of grip tape. The added wrapping provides a stickier grip, better friction when shouldering a tool, somewhere to bite down on when matching and awkwardly hanging upside down, as well as some added protection for the inevitable tool drop.

I’ve tried every type of sticky grip tape I could find but after years of experimenting I’ve settled on the cheapest and most durable solution, though it is not necessarily the stickiest: road bike tubes.

Check out the video below for a How-To on wrapping your own tools with bike tube.
