I (Raf) launched The Alpine Start in January 2013 as a way to answer all my friends’ questions about gear. At the time, I was working in a gear shop and went through an alarming amount of gear in order to find the ‘perfect’ kit for me, so naturally everybody around asked me for feedback. Those are the humble beginnings of TAS, and since then it has grown into the site you’re visiting now. I hope you enjoy your stay and find the information useful!

As a climber, I started bouldering on the coast of Nova Scotia back in 2002 or so. I gradually picked up sport and trad, but only wholly launched myself into climbing when I moved to Canmore, AB, in late 2009. I climbed my first frozen waterfall in 2010, my first big north face in 2013 and, also in 2013, entered my first ice/mixed comp. Ice and mixed have taken over my winters, and I’m lucky to be surrounded by some of the best routes in the world.

Over the last few years, I’m staggered at the amazing opportunities I’ve had and the fantastic people I’ve met. Here’s small selection of some great memories from the past few years:

Posing down on the Athabasca Glacier for Paul Zizka.

Same glacier, different spot. Having fun with John Price.

Hanging out at the Temple crag, photo by Matt Westlake.

Climbing in China with Alik Berg.
